Scammers posing as Canada Revenue Agency collectors

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – When the Canada Revenue Agency comes calling, most people listen, but police in Abbotsford are warning people to double check a demand for payment.

Police received a few complaints of the scam in December, where residents were told they had anywhere from 45 minutes to 24 hours to make a payment raging from $200 to $5,000.

Those residents were told if they didn’t pay up, police would be sent to their homes.

Investigators say they received a few more complaints in January and February, but on March 18, the department received reports of over 20 incidents.

In one case, police say an unsuspecting resident paid the fraudsters nearly $5,000.

Abbotsford police say if the public does get a call from someone claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency, they should contact the agency to confirm if any money is owed.
