Despite early worries, 2013 was good for local film industry

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Quite a difference a few months can make: despite concerns this time last year, 2013 turned out to be a solid one for BC’s film industry.

A number of Metro Vancouver cities report near-record years.

North Vancouver, New Westminster and Richmond are among the cities that have come out in recent days to tout the results of the past year. This comes even after many in the industry started last year by warning the province was losing business to others.

Pete Mitchell of the Vancouver Film Studios says the second half of 2013 really changed the outlook.

“Some of the incentives that people are offering in other parts of North America look really good on the face of it, but by the time they are proved out and the money comes back, it’s substantially less.”

His view of the incentives being offered in BC has changed dramatically in the last year.

“What we have here in BC is a fantastic administration of the tax credit system, and we have tax credits that are strong for the producer, they are attractive, they are not as high as a lot of other places,” says Mitchell.

He expects this year to be another solid one in BC.
