Richmond’s only non-religious private school filling a void

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – A new private school in Richmond in its first year is attracting parents who are looking to avoid the problems that can often come along with the public system.

“Ya that’s part of it. The big class sizes, the labour action and all that, that’s part of it,” says Anne Yu, who founded Pythagoras Academy along with her husband.

But, the Academy also has another feature unique to Richmond that makes it a sought after destination.

“It’s very strange that in Richmond we don’t have a non-religious private school at all. There might be some smaller schools up to grade two or three like the Montessori school, but they’re more for daycare,” says Yu.

So Yu and her husband set out to change all that.

They currently run up to grade 7 but the hope is to eventually expand to grade 12.

“It’s really strange that except for Christian schools, nobody is doing that. So we found that there’s a huge need and we decided to go ahead and do this,” says Yu, who got the idea for the school when she was pregnant with twins.

The school is wrapping up its first academic year and Yu says the response from parents has been strong, with most just happy to have an alternative to having their kids shuttled to another community.

Yu says they’re already thinking about future plans but they’ll take it one step at a time.
