Grim task of searching for WA mudslide victims continues

OSO, WA (NEWS1130) – The death toll is expected to rise as the search for victims of last weekend’s deadly mudslide in Washington State continues today.

The searchers are beginning to dig deeper, in some areas they’ve done an initial sweep of debris looking for victims.

Battalion Chief Steve Mason says they want to do a second sweep. “As we move through this process we want to be more and more methodical. So, instead of going to those obvious places, now we’re looking at the inobvious places.”

The entire search process could take weeks or even longer and there is a chance some victims may never be found.

Robin Youngblood’s mobile home was wrenched from its base when the enormous wall of mud raced down a valley on Saturday.

She says she’s grateful to be alive. “I have no idea how I came out without being crushed from limb to limb.”

Several bodies have been found, but not yet recovered or added to the official death toll of 17.

Dozens are still listing as missing or unaccounted for since the massive slide last weekend.
