Education minister downplays Delta mom’s fee lawsuit

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Your education minister seems to be downplaying a lawsuit filed by a Delta woman against her local school board.

Peter Fassbender says there have been similar situations before, and he cautions he hasn’t heard all the details of this case.

But he adds while the province must provide education, there are times when districts will ask parents to pay up.

“There are aspects of that, when it comes to some activities, that districts are asking parents to be a partner in providing some support for those things. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.”

“The basic education program is provided by the province, we contribute over $5 billion dollars every single year, a billion dollars more a year since 2001,” adds Fassbender.

Susan Fetterkind, a mother of three, argues the School Act, allows an education at “no or very little cost.”

She says she’s fed up with paying for workbooks, school supplies, field trips and more.
