Mike Farnworth quits BC NDP leadership race

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – BC New Democrat Mike Farnworth has abandoned his bid to become party leader. He is endorsing John Horgan, who is now the only person in the running.

OMNI TV Political Analyst Kim Emerson says it was becoming apparent to Farnworth and everyone else that the momentum was falling in squarely behind Horgan.

“Now, Mike Farnworth sees what everybody else saw, that John Horgan has the momentum. He has the push from a major group within the party and he sees that Horgan is likely going to be the easy winner. Rather than wait until September, spend a ton of money getting through to the end of September and having then leadership vote, he’s decided that now is the time to go.”

He says the party will have to make a decision now as to how to move forward. Emerson says the last day for anyone to step up is May 1st which means Horgan could be leader as early as May 2nd. There is no requirement then for the party to go forward with any sort of vote.

Emerson says it’s unlikely that someone else will step up though to run.

He adds the party just needs to get Adrian Dix out as leader right now.

“The government is dismissive of him in every way and every time he stands up…it really becomes a tough thing for even Adrian to be there and to have to come in day after day and be the pretend leader of the party when there is somebody else waiting in the wings.”
