Talks resume between the BCTF and the province

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Contract talks between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government resume today, with both sides still divided on how best to proceed.

BCTF leader Jim Iker says a 10-year deal is still out of the question.

“We’ve got a three-year term on the table. We’re open to a longer term deal; we did one in 2006. But it has to make sense for our members… it’s got to represent a fair deal for teachers, which includes better support for students.”

“We’re hoping to get a negotiated deal at the bargaining table. We know that won’t be today, but that’s what our goal is,” he adds.

The union has been calling for a three year deal with a 13.5 per cent increase, but the employer wants a 10-year deal with a seven per cent bump over the first six years of the contract.
