Canucks name Linden as president

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Canucks have named Trevor Linden as President of Hockey Operations.

After being eliminated from the play-off picture and canning general manager Mike Gillis, the Vancouver Canucks have called a news conference for this morning.

The one time captain of the team and head of the NHL Players Association runs a number of business ventures, including a chain of fitness outlets, and many fans like the thought of Linden in the franchise’s front office.

Linden will be responsible for all hockey operations, including the coaching and scouting staffs, player procurement and development, and minor league affiliations and operations.

“I think it’s a really good move. We need a change,” says Tim.

“I think it’s pretty awesome. I think Linden probably has a bead on what the fans want,” adds Jules.

“I feel good about that. He has been part of the organization for a long time and nothing but good things come from Trevor Linden as far as I’m concerned,” smiles Paul.

But is putting Linden at the top just be optics — a move to appease an unhappy fanbase?

“It’s probably a little bit of both. They wouldn’t ask him if they didn’t think that he could do the job and it’s hard not to love Trevor,” says Dillon.

“It very well could be. I mean, I’m happy and I was very upset before. It appeases me!” laughs Catherine

“It might be. I’d have to see what he plans for the team first, I guess. But good thing they fired Mike Gillis. I’m happy about that!” adds Matthew.

Sportsnet Radio’s Rick Dhaliwal has been sifting through all the speculation in the News1130 Sports Centre.

Once a new leadership group is in place, Dhaliwal says there will be some tough decisions to make.

“The new general manager, whoever it is, will have to decide the fate of coach John Tortorella, who has four years left on his contract at $2 million per year. Does the new GM keep him or go in a different direction?”
