CRA cuts off access to electronic services over security worries

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The Canada Revenue Agency says it has temporarily cut off public access to its electronic services over security concerns.

The agency says it shut down access to protect the security of taxpayer information.

It’s shut down access to services like E-File, Netfile, My Account, My Business Account, and Represent a Client.

It says the move is preventative, and has been prompted by information about something called the “Heartbleed Bug.”

The bug is a flaw in OpenSSL.

OpenSSL provides a secure connection when you’re chatting or sending e-mails.

Reports say OpenSSL has had the code in it for about two years.

The CRA says it’s working on fixing the issue and getting online services back in a way that makes sure your private information is safe.

The agency offered no other information beyond a terse statement on its website.

This is a busy time of year for the tax agency, as people file returns electronically and track the progress of refunds online.

As of the end of March, the agency had received 6.7 million returns, with 84 per cent filed electronically.
