Grouse Mountain bears awake from hibernation

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Grouse Mountain bears are awake and ready for the season.

Grinder and Coola had been in hibernation for 139 days, but are again wandering the Peak of Vancouver.

Jacqueline Blackwell with Grouse Mountain says that’s a pretty average amount for the bears to sleep. “They’ve been in hibernation, they’ve decided to be in for as little as 67 days before and as long as 150, so it kind of just depends on the weather and how they’re feeling.”

Blackwell says the pair of bears are consistently monitored during hibernation by a team of veterinarians. “They come out of hibernation and they are in their habitat for our visitors to come and see from this time until around November.”

The bears have lived on Grouse Mountain since 2001, when they were brought to the Refuge for Endangered Wildlife after being orphaned.

They’re both thirteen years old and weigh roughly 990 pounds each.
