High number of teens involved in Internet-related crime: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A local security expert isn’t surprised the person arrested in the data breach at the Canada Revenue Agency is a teenager.

He also expects more arrests around the world as fallout from the Heartbleed bug continues.

Mounties have seized the computer of a 19-year-old from London, Ontario.

The teen was arrested yesterday and charged with unauthorized use of a computer and mischief.

Professor Emeritus Richard Rossenberg at SFU says the number of young people involved in Internet-related crime is very high.

“There have been lots of examples of young people involved in what might have seemed a few years ago as incredible activities, now becomes almost run-of-the-mill,” says Rossenberg.

He says the fallout of the Heartbleed bug also extends far beyond the CRA. “They’ll uncover it over the next few days and months, given that it’s been around for at least two years, means it has spread very widely.”

The breach meant 900 Canadians had their SIN’s compromised and it extended the tax deadline for many others.
