BCCPAC disappointed but not surprised by teacher job action

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – They’re sad and disappointed, but not surprised.

That’s the feeling among parent advisory councils in BC after word that teachers will begin job action next week.

Terry Berting with the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils says this has become business as usual in education in this province.

He says the teachers union almost seems to be negotiating with one foot out the door, and adds the government has been ruthless in its directions to school districts. He’s expecting job action will escalate.

“I’m a generally optimistic person, I really try to look for the best, but this time around, you know, it just seems almost inevitable,” Berting says.

He adds he went to one of the union’s AGMs. “It was just almost, like I said before, business as usual, this has become the accepted way of dealing with labour trouble here.”

Berting says it may be time to be more vocal than the group has been in the past.

BCCPAC is set to meet to talk about next steps and options.

The BCTF announced yesterday teachers will start stage one of job action Wednesday, targeting administration. It says this first stage won’t disrupt students.
