More Millenials looking for work

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The workforce is changing as more and more people born after 1980 look for jobs.

One expert says the problem goes both ways, older managers feel frustrated and the Millenials are frustrated too with their Boomer and Gen-X-er supervisors.

Merge Gupta-Sunderji says one part of the conflict comes from Millenials’ desire for work-life balance. “Because they push for it, because they are a force to be reckoned with in sheer numbers, they frustrate Boomers and Gen-X-ers who say things like ‘kids these days, they have no work ethic.’ They do have a work ethic, it’s just different from ours.”

Gupta-Sunderji says some of the frustration for Baby Boomers and Gen-X-ers comes from Millenials expecting things to be done quickly. “They’re questioning why we’ve always done it that way. Here’s the perspective, when I talk to Boomers and Gen-X-ers they will say to me ‘all Millenials are lazy.’ I say to them ‘maybe they aren’t lazy, maybe they’re just looking for a faster and better way to get things done.’ It’s about switching our perspective.”

Gupta-Sunderji says previous generations talked about work-life balance but she doesn’t think Boomers or Gen-X-ers actually achieved it.
