Fast food industry fails to place as “best employers for young people”

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s a new spotlight focused on the fast-food industry as it deals with the controversy over the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

The sector has failed to make it onto a list of “best employers for young people.”

The youth list is an offshoot of the “Canada’s top 100 employers” project.

“What we’re looking for is an employer that’s in that area, that makes a commitment to try to develop the young people that work there, that doesn’t just limit them to, you know, a few part-time shifts during the week,” explains Mediacorp publisher Tony Meehan.

He also says coffee chains and retail have similar situations.

The restaurant industry isn’t left out entirely. Locally based Cactus Club is recognized for tuition subsidies of up to $5,000 a year. “Cactus Club will not only pay for the program, they’ll give you time off and pay for your in-class time to make sure you get that certification,” Meehan says.

Vancouver-based Joey’s is praised for its skills development of apprentice chefs.
