Many parents side with teachers week into job action

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s been exactly one week since teachers in this province started phase one of job action, in their quest for a new contract.

But is their refusal to carry out some duties really putting pressure on the province to get a deal done?

The union promised there would be no effect on students, and we’ve been speaking with parents to find out if that has in fact been the case.

All the parents we asked said no — it’s been business as usual.

The union has said if this goes into phase two, rotating strikes would begin.

The level of concern about that is mixed. “It wouldn’t be good for kids and the families,” says one parent.

Another adds, “I’m not concerned about it at all, because I feel like it’s the only way the teachers are going to get a fair settlement.”

“I think the biggest nightmare for everybody is you know, if the teachers just take the day off,” says a third.

Where do parents stand on the issue as a whole?

Most had the same answer.

“I’m side of the teachers,” confirmed one parent.

“I mean the teachers are playing a huge responsibility and role in raising our kids,” added another.

For one parent, it was an easy decision. “Totally support the teachers with this one.”
