No more budget cuts to our kids’ education: parent group

PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – A parent group is rallying for better-funded education for their children.

Parents4BC, a group concerned with the quality of education in the province, says it wants the school board and the government to stop pointing fingers and reach a solution for the sake of the children.

“What we want is simple enough: a sustainable public school system that meets the needs of ALL B.C. children, allowing them to thrive and grow into healthy, contributing citizens of our wonderful Province,” says a press release from the parent group.

Lisa Cable with Parents4BC says the kids are the ones paying the price for constant budget cuts in school districts across BC.

“We know that all these things are going on, and still there are kids absolutely not having their needs met, and that are suffering in the school system, and as parents we’re saying that’s just not acceptable.”

Cable lives in the Tri-Cities area, but says the issues there are similar to those seen in other schools in the province. According to Cable, even kids without additional challenges don’t have all the resources they need to really maximize their potential under the current school system.

“Services for children with special needs are being cut, now they’re talking about cutting bus service for next year, teachers do not have the resources they need in the classrooms to teach,” adds Cable.

Parents4BC are meeting on Friday afternoon to voice their concerns in front of their local MLA’s office in Port Moody.
