MISSION (NEWS1130) – A Mission high school student with a life-threatening illness may be able to attend her graduation ceremony after all.

In a follow-up to a story News1130 brought you last month, the mother of the Grade 12 girl who was originally told she would never make up her classes in time has some good news to share.

Lori Giesbrect was originally told her daughter was too behind in her schoolwork to be able to take part in any grad activities, but now says Shelby will get to attend her grad ceremony and her formal celebration.

“Shelby is very excited. She is very relieved. She has been working so hard, and it has paid off,” says Lori.

She tells us three years ago, they didn’t even know if Shelby would live to see the age of 17. “She fought back from the brink of death in the intensive care unit. So, this is a very proud day.”

Lori says she had asked the school to make an exception for Shelby, who ended up in a coma three years ago after complications with Type 1 diabetes.

She claims the school had originally said there was no way Shelby could catch up on her school workload in time, but no exception was needed.

Not only will Shelby walk across the stage in her cap and gown, but Lori adds she’ll get to wear her grad dress and take her boyfriend to prom.

“She’s been working very hard and the school came through for us.”
