Nanaimo home to one of the first major commercial marijuana grow ops

NANAIMO (NEWS1130) – The federal legislation that moved the growing of medicinal pot to large commercial producers has been in effect for just over a month now.

The operator of one of the first such operations, located in Nanaimo, says it’s the most cutting-edge medical cannabis production facility that he’s ever seen.

Phillippe Lucas is the Vice President of Patient Research for Tilray, the company behind a new $10 million, 60,000 square foot facility near Duke Point.

“We felt very welcome by the mayor and council and by the municipality as a whole. We’ve been hiring all local architects, local engineers, and we’ve got now about 60 full time staff all of them from the region.”

Lucas says there are plans for Tilray to expand elsewhere.
