Coquitlam SAR finally has own long-line helicopter rescue capability

By

Coquitlam Search and Rescue is now able to carry out long line helicopter rescues independently.

SAR manager Michael Coyle says in the past his group has had to call in North Shore Rescue rather than act alone. While nine members of his team have long line training, Coquitlam’s unit didn’t have the necessary equipment–and Coyle says the timing is perfect.

“It’s great to have this available before the busy season,” Coyle told News1130. “The upcoming weekends through to August are the highest call volumes for all SAR teams in B.C.”

The training and equipment cost $45,000, which was provided through a City of Coquitlam grant. The group expected to buy the equipment in 2011, but Transport Canada needed to review it and ensure it met its standards.
