Pay-by-phone coming to all three major wireless networks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pay-by-smartphone technology is taking another step forward, thanks to Canada’s second-largest bank.

TD Bank is claiming a first for its mobile wallet.

First in that it will be available to the customers of all three major wireless networks. The CIBC’s version doesn’t work on Telus. News1130 parent Rogers rolled out its Suretap service last month but it only works with the company’s own prepaid MasterCard.

Rizwan Khalfan is a TD VP who says none of these offerings accepts a debit card.

“We want to continue to figure out how to extend it to even debit cards but our initial offering is on the existing Visa cards that our customers have.”

Also out of luck are users of the iPhone.

It does not have the near-field communications technology that makes such payments possible. Khalfan says the system’s security is equal to that of a tap-and-go chip card.
