VPD warns if you leave valuables in the car, you’re a target for thieves

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you park at any of Vancouver’s parks or beaches, make sure you don’t leave any valuables in your car.

You’re not only a target for thieves, but also police.

The Vancouver Police Department kicked off a “theft from auto” campaign today, with officers and volunteers all around Stanley Park stopping people and giving tips on how not to be a victim.

Constable Brian Montague says are also giving out special seat mats. “It’s basically a sign that someone puts on their seat after they’ve removed all the valuables from their car. It actually tells thieves that there’s nothing valuable in the car.”

“I think people, unfortunately, become complacent sometimes. They justify leaving something in their car because they’re only going to be gone for a short while. But I can assure you that breaking into a car takes only seconds,” he adds.

Similar campaigns are planned through the summer in other Vancouver parks and throughout out the downtown core.
