Cruise ship season kicks off in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s super Saturday for cruise ships in Vancouver.

It’s a peak day of volume with four of the big ships at berth for the first time this year.

That means there will be 14,500 people disembarking and embarking around Canada Place and Ballantyne Pier today.

John Parker Jervis with Port Metro Vancouver explains each ship generates about $2-million in revenue for Vancouver. “We are expecting 243 calls by 29 different ships in the 2014 season. That would add an estimated $486 million to our local economies.”

He says it’s about the same as last year, which was a 22 per cent increase from 2012.
