Federal NDP demanding answers over contracts awarded to Conservative MP

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The federal opposition is demanding answers from the Harper government after reports that a Conservative MP was awarded over a million dollars in contracts before she made it to the House of Commons.

Wai Young’s consulting firm landed the contracts being offered by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration for conferences in Toronto.

The first one was awarded in spring 2008, when she was already a candidate for the conservatives in the riding of Vancouver South. she lost that election but was awarded the second contract in 2009.

The NDP’s Ethics Critic Charlie Angus says this doesn’t seem right. “It certainly doesn’t pass the smell test that conservative candidates that run for the party are then seen getting government contracts.

He says the government needs to release all documents of these contracts to make sure there was no favouritism.

Wai Young tells the Globe she didn’t break any rules and the contracts were awarded by bureaucrats, not politicians.

Federal ethics rules prevent MPs from getting any government contracts but they don’t apply to candidates.
