Grad celebrations will still go on despite teacher lockout: BCCPAC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Grad celebrations across the province will still go on, according to BCCPAC.

The BCPSEA has threatened a teacher lockout if the union begins rotating strikes next week, which the BCTF says would mean cancelled extracurricular activities.

BCCPAC President Terry Berting says it’s during these times of crisis that parents everywhere can really be of good use and he’s encouraging PACs to reach out.

“A lot of the school community either takes them for granted or doesn’t know what they do or how they can help. So, if you’re wondering what to do at your school, contact the PAC. It’s a great resource to have and there are some wonderful people who know about the school community and can help out in any way they can.”

But he admits a lot of work goes into planning grad celebrations.

“You can’t escape the fact that it’s going to be difficult. I can’t deny it,” he says. “They will happen; we’ve had this before. Of course, from district to district, school to school, there are variations on how much will get done, but we’re going to be monitoring it ourselves and help out wherever we can.”

Berting adds many parents have already stepped up, not only with planning grad, but also volunteering with sports and other activities.

He calls it tragic that teachers may not be able to attend the celebrations. “We all care about our teachers and especially students, for them not to be there would be difficult.”
