Time is running out for parents to find child care during teacher walkouts

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver will be one of the first school districts to be hit with a one-day closure tomorrow, with other schools across the province following suit throughout the week.

Schools can still be used as a last resort for child care if parents are scrambling, but it’s not recommended.

Abbotsford school superintendent Kevin Godden says not only will teachers be absent in his district Wednesday, but the support staff most likely will not cross the picket lines.

“Schools will be open, but we won’t have any staff to supervise, and obviously teach kids. So, we’re asking parents to keep the kids at home. We won’t be running our buses,” he explains.

Godden says if parents are desperate, they’ll try their best to accomodate their needs. “We’ll have our principals and vice-principals there, we understand if a parent because of circumstances cannot [find child care] than we would provide supervision for the child as long as we can.”
