Vancouver Police Band performing changing of the guard ceremonies in England

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Police Band is claiming a rare honour.

Sgt. Bob Murphie says it will be the first non-military pipe band ever to perform in the 350-year history of the changing of the guard ceremonies in England.

The band will play for royal audiences at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in June.

Murphie says the trip has been about two years in the making and is meant to celebrate the band’s centennial year.

The pipe band was formed in 1914, and the police department says it’s the oldest non-military pipe band in British Columbia and the longest continually serving police pipe band in the world.

It has played around the globe _ including in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States and Switzerland _ and Murphie says it will be an immeasurable honour to play for Canada’s head of state during the band’s centennial year.
