Parents’ group wants to know each time child is told to leave class as punishment

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – As teachers fight for things like bigger paycheques and smaller class sizes, one parents’ group is asking them to do even more.

The Victoria Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils wants teachers to let parents know every time their child is told to leave class as a punishment.

John Bird, the group’s president, feels this is necessary as kids often act out because their needs are not being met.

“A student who is taken out of class multiple times… we still have not spent much time with all the players in the room, figuring out what’s going on for the kid.  The purpose behind the reporting system is to generate collaborative discussion so that the students’ needs can be met.”

“Otherwise, there is no way to really deduce what is happening to the child. Where there is a one-off situation, it is not a huge burden to make a note and make a phone call. When it is an ongoing pattern situation, you must have that recorded; otherwise, you are not in a position to help the child properly.”

The Education Ministry agrees with this step because it says checking with parents may give insight into why the child is not behaving.

The group will discuss the idea at a meeting this weekend.
