We’re years away from construction of Massey replacement, but early work starts today

By

DELTA (NEWS1130) – If you live south of the Fraser River and have to contend with commuting through the Massey Tunnel you know what a mess it can be.

While we may be years away from a new crossing to replace the tube, work is starting to get underway.

Geotechnical crews are starting early work, including soil testing around the area where the new bridge will be built. Crews will be there today and tomorrow.

The work will not affect traffic, but there will be a closure of the Millenium Trail along the Fraser River, between River Road and Deas Slough.

The Millenium Trail will be closed to all traffic today. Tomorrow, it will be open to pedestrian traffic only. Cyclists can get over, but they’ll have to get off and walk.

The Ministry of Transportation is looking at the soil conditions at the site of the proposed bridge crossing. The work will help the team develop a technical design for the new bridge and the improvements to the Highway 99 corridor.

The actual construction of the bridge isn’t scheduled to start until sometime in 2017.
