Annual walk planned to honour memory of murdered Delta teen

DELTA (NEWS1130) – The fourth annual Laura Szendrei Walk, Run and Roll is taking place in Delta today.

This year’s event will be the first since her killer was sentenced.

Szendrei’s aunt, Sharon Ciccozzi, says there’s been a change in venue and the event will be held at North Delta Secondary School, allowing people to stay in one spot and take in the entertainment. “A lot of people, route marshalls, they missed a lot of the festivities because they were down by the bog, or wherever they were situated along the route.”

Ciccozzi says they have been working hard to reinvent themselves while continuing to honour Laura’s memory. “We’re going to think of doing some type of music festival, some type of fashion show, we’re hoping to partner up with violence against women and children organizations.”

Money raised from the event goes towards the Laura Szendrei Memorial Scholarship Foundation Society. “We also have a guest recipient receiving from Kwantlen University, they’re going to be receiving a $20,000 cheque from us for their institution when we set it up.”

The 15-year-old was walking through Mackie Park in September, 2010, when she was beaten. She died in hospital the next day.

A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for seven years.
