BC film industry gearing up for a busy summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC film industry has been bolstered now that Sony is moving its visual effects head office to Vancouver from California.

It’s going to be a busy summer, with 18 TV series being shot in Vancouver.

Peter Leitch with the Motion Picture Production Industry Association says Hollywood North is attractive for a lot of reasons including, the ability to shoot year round, our good track record, and natural beauty.

“A Night at the Museum, they shot part of the Interior as Egypt, outside the Kamloops area. They just clear some of the vegetation there, so we’ve got those opportunities to do those things that other jurisdictions don’t,” he explains.

He adds what’s tough right now is that other cities are offering competitive tax breaks.

“Jurisdictions like Louisiana and Georgia are building up their infrastructure. I think we’ll always be one of the leaders in content creation,” he adds.

BC’s film industry employs about 30,000 people every year.
