Bike to Work Week numbers were up this year: HUB

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Bike to Work week attracted 3,000 more people, compared to last year.

Just over 7,500 people took part across Metro Vancouver this year.

Laura Jane with HUB: Your Cycling Connection says added incentives like prizes played a role, as did increased support from the business community and improved infrastructure for cyclists.

“It’s a lot easier to convince people to try biking to work when it’s safe to do so,” says Jane, though she feels more can be done to encourage cycling, like establishing more bike lanes.

“Obviously, in Vancouver proper, there are lots of streets that still don’t have separated bike lanes that need them.”

There were also a lot of first-timers in this year’s Bike to Work week.

“In the end, we had over 1,600 people bike to work who had never biked to work before. We actually had one woman who was 53 who hadn’t biked… since she was 12,” says Jane.

She notes they also had more schools participating in Bike to School week, which also took place last week.
