Surrey parents, administrators stepping in to make grad ceremonies happen

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The partial lockout and rotating strikes in public schools have jeopardized a lot of extra curricular activities, including many grad ceremonies.

But we’re hearing Grade 12 students in Surrey will get to cross the stage in their caps and gowns.

“They need to juggle things a bit, shuffle things around a bit. Obviously, we’ll be depending a lot on school administrators to carry the ball on a lot more things,” says Doug Strachan with the Surrey School District.

However, he says it can be done.

“With those adjustments and with help from parents [and] the students themselves, we are optimistic that the grad events will go ahead,” says Strachan.

He says the district hopes teachers can be a part of grad, but if the dispute drags on, they can still make grad ceremonies happen.

Rotating strikes hit schools Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday this week. Locally, Richmond, Delta, Maple Ridge, and Langley are out today.
