Don’t tip off burglars about your vacation plans through social media!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As you plan your summer vacation time and then head out on holiday, do you post every moment on Facebook and Twitter? You could be making your home a very easy target for thieves.

It’s one reason burglaries increase dramatically July through September.

Insurance company Aviva says they see claims jump through the summer. Glen Cooper with the company says you might want to keep your plans and your exciting trip on the down-low when it comes to social media.

“Everyone loves to post on social media, whether they’re currently on vacation or have just booked their tickets for vacation. Keep that noise to a minimum and post your pictures when you get back,” he advises.

To foil the more low-tech thieves simply looking for empty-looking homes, Cooper says there are easy steps you can take to protect yourself.

“You need to really make your house look like there’s people still in it. Thieves are opportunistic and if they know you’re away by whatever indication you give them, they’re going to target your house.”

He also suggests using light timers and having a neighbour park a car in your driveway.

“Have a neighbourhood kid mow your lawn and pick up your newspapers and mail,” he adds.
