Program allows young people to be part of the democratic process

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Millions of registered voters cast a ballot in last night’s election in Ontario. Thousands of students also got the chance to do so.

It’s thanks to a program that allows young people to be part of the democratic process.

About 170,000 students in Ontario voted in schools over the last few days, says Taylor Gunn with CIVIX. “They learned all about the democratic process, met the local candidates, spoke to their parents about who to vote for, and then cast a ballot.”

“There’s a lot of evidence and proof that if young people don’t rehearse the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and start voting when they’re young, they may never vote at all,” he explains.

Gunn adds they are hoping to bring the program back to BC. “We’re in the process now of raising funds to hopefully run a student vote program for the upcoming local government elections this fall.”

The goal is to create engaged citizens.
