When Emily Carr University leaves Granville Island, what will become of the space?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What does Granville Island need? More restaurants? Shops? A museum?

Emily Carr University of Arts and Design is leaving in 2016; the question now is what will become of the large, empty space in one of the busiest spots in town.

With over 10 million visitors each year, finding the right businesses to take over from Granville Island’s largest tenant is the key. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. has done a report on possible ideas for the property.

For the south building, it recommends keeping the existing classrooms intact to save money, and offering art classes there or opening a museum.

As for the north building, it suggests a brew pub, urban winery, artist studios, a commercial kitchen, and even a 1,000 seat music venue.

So far, the report lists Capilano University, Langara College and the Vancouver Public Library as companies expressing interest in becoming tenants.

Regardless of who moves in, construction will need to be done on the buildings, and who will pay for that is another big question.
