CRA assures tax payers their information is safe

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canada Revenue Agency is assuring your tax information cannot be accessed under the US Patriot Act.

We told you last week, a BC privacy advocate had concerns about records potentially being accessed by American agencies.

Rather than being held by the Canadian government, our records are stored with a company called Mobilshred Incorporated, operating as Recall.

In an e-mail, the CRA says its contract with Mobilshred stipulates all records have to stay in Canada, and cannot be accessed under the act.

It adds the company would be subject to criminal penalties if Mobilshred was to disclose taxpayer information other than to the CRA.

The agency says Mobilshred is a Canadian company, registered and located in Canada.

On the Industry Canada website, Mobilshred is listed as a division of Recall, and Recall is listed as foreign-owned.

A representative at Recall told News1130 it is American-owned, and the company’s website says its global headquarters is in Georgia.
