RCMP concerned after another drone spotted flying around YVR

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Another drone has been spotted too close to Vancouver International Airport — in fact, Mounties say this time it crossed flight paths.

It happened Monday afternoon and police may have a lead as to who is responsible.

Richmond RCMP Sgt Cam Kowalski says this unmanned aircraft was right along the north runway by Iona beach. “It’s a North American trend, they’ve become more powerful, they can fly higher, people like to put Go-Pro cameras on them and look at the airplanes coming in. It’s concerning because if one were to ever collide with an aircraft, there could be catastrophic consequences.”

Back in April, a YouTube video was posted of a drone getting very close to planes approaching YVR from the east.

Kowalski says if the person or people behind the videos are caught, they could be looking at a list of charges and significant fines — but the biggest concern for now is safety.
