BCTF making changes to picket lines around BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With summer well underway and students out of class, you may notice fewer teachers walking picket lines across BC.

In Chilliwack, you won’t see any at all!

Summer school isn’t happening in that district, and the president of the teachers’ association says none of the activities the teachers’ union wants picketed are in Chilliwack.

Clint Johnston is afraid without people seeing anyone out, teachers’ message could get lost.

“That is a risk, definitely. At the same time, we have to take into consideration our CUPE colleagues and the work they’re doing, and what effect our picketing will have, so we’re considering our options, but right now, we think there’s no need to picket anywhere,” Johnston says.

He adds there likely will be some kind of action later in the summer.

“Likely more of a demonstration type action with pickets and demonstration some time before school starts up, and of course, if there’s no deal then things will ramp back up significantly.”

Johnston adds the decision balances with the needs of CUPE workers who can now go ahead with their work without having to be concerned about crossing picket lines.
