North Shore Rescue watching social media for stolen equipment

NORTH VAN (NEWS1130) – Police are no closer to making an arrest after a string of thefts involving equipment from North Shore Rescue in the last two weeks.

Forensics officers have looked into the crime scenes but they’re not optimistic that will yield any leads.

The value of the missing equipment from the four caches reaches into the tens of thousands of dollars.

RCMP Cpl. Richard DeJong says their biggest hope is that some of it will surface online. “Somebody is either going to use it for personal gain or, try to sell it on social media. They’re going to brag about it or talk about it with friends and acquaintances.”

So they’re relying on the public for help.

“We’re hoping that somebody hears something, knows something, observes something suspicious, sees someone coming out with a large amount of gear.”

DeJong says the amount of equipment should make it hard to get rid of. “You wouldn’t think so. With something like this, it’s either a crime off opportunity or somebody being very intentional, perhaps somebody with a vendetta against search and rescue.”

He says they’re keeping an open mind in the search for a suspect.

“We’re open to any possible solution as to how this happened, why this continues to happen.”

North Shore Rescue hasn’t said how long it will take to replace the equipment.
