Local firm looking for people who’ve bought e-books

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you bought an e-book any time in the last four years, you’re entitled to a rebate.

That’s because of a partially-settled class action lawsuit. The case alleges that a variety of publishers and Apple conspired to keep the price of e-books artificially high.

Local law firm Branch MacMaster LLP is encouraging consumers to contact them if they have purchased e-books from April 2010 until now.

Luciana Brasil with the firm says the suit has already resulted in a settlement with the publishers, but the litigation continues against Apple

She can’t say what kinds of refunds buyers can expect.

“It depends on whether it is a new release, or not a new release. So it can vary a little bit,” she explains.

“What we are doing with this settlement is, we’re not proposing to distribute any money right now. The idea is to hold these funds, and to hopefully eventually to get additional funds from Apple either through a settlement or through a judgement.”

All Canadian buyers of e-books in the specified time frame are automatically included in the lawsuit. But Brasil says you can contact her firm to provide your name and contact information, so that you will get updates once the courts approve a plan to distribute the proceeds of the settlement.
