Who are your teens hanging out with?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The long weekend could be a good time to talk with your teens about new friends they may have met this summer, especially the ones who seem to have a lot of money.

Members of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit want to help you keep your kids from getting mixed up with low-level gangsters.

Sergeant Lindsay Houghton says it can start with drug use, and can evolve into selling narcotics.

“We see time and time again, that dial-a-doping is often the low level entry point for many young kids and young adults and we’ve seen unfortunately far too often people who are involved in dial- a- doping being the victims of often very violent crimes, including murder.”

Houghton says part of the issue is parents who, while wanting to give their children independence, may have let them get in with the wrong crowd.

He has interviewed parents of gang member who were involved in dial-a-doping who have been murdered, calling the circumstances tragic,”They had no idea their son or daughter was involved in this until it was too late, well we want to end that. We want to stop the until it’s too late part.”

He adds the Unit has just published a new brochure to help you start the conversation with your kids, and some hints at what you should be looking for.

Here is an online copy of the brochure.
