Mayoral candidate in Surrey looking for clarification on RCMP activity

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Crime is apparently still top of mind for people living in Surrey and the man hoping to become mayor in November is trying to do something about it.

Doug McCallum has filed three Freedom of Information requests about the RCMP.

He wants to know how many of the 673 officers were on patrol over the past month, how many of them are on sick or stress leave, and how many are on loan to another detachment right now.

McCallum says people keep telling him they’re worried about their safety. “We need to get our police officers out of their offices and onto our street. On bike patrols, on foot patrols, in their patrol cars, and working with our community.”

He hasn’t met with Mounties yet.

The city signed a 20-year contract with the RCMP a couple of years ago. It’s a $101-million deal, the majority paid by taxpayers.
