Biggest concerns in lead-up to civic election depend on where you live: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With the civic election only a few months away, the issues you want to see tackled by politicians depends on where you call home. A new survey shows the most important thing to Vancouverites is not the same for people living in Surrey.

Mario Canseco with Insights West says housing is the most important issue for most people in Vancouver.

“It is the number one issue for those who are between the ages of 18 to 34. This is the group that have consistently voted for Vision Vancouver. I think they will need to be engaged on this matter to support the mayor and his team again. This is the number one issue for them by far.”

He notes the next-biggest concern in Vancouver is transportation.

But voters in Surrey are not as worried about housing and getting around; the survey finds their top concern is crime.

Canseco says when it comes to Vancouver’s mayoral race, Gregor Robertson has a huge lead in one pretty important category. “We do see that there is a lot of name recognition for the mayor. Obviously, he has been around for a while.”

Only two per cent of people asked said they did not know who Robertson was. But Canseco says the other candidates did not fare as well in the name recognition category.

“Not a lot of name recognition for Kirk LaPointe from the NPA, even though people who know who is tend to have very good views on him.  There is a large majority who don’t know who he is yet.”

Canseco says about 65 per cent of people polled could not name the other two candidates, Glen Chernan (Cedar) and Colin Shandler (Independent).

The municipal election is November 15th, 2014.
