Nearly 100 more firefighters headed to BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It may feel like the summer is waning, but hundreds of firefighters are still slogging away at this province’s wildfires.

In fact, 90 more firefighters are arriving in BC this weekend.

The firefighters from Ontario and Alberta are joining the 360 out-of-province and 75 Australian personnel already here.

Dustin Eno with the wildfire branch says the biggest fires are in the Prince George area.

“A lot of resources are being shifted around the province. We are facing a situation where our crews need rest. Fourteen days on the fire lines are the maximum for safety reasons before we give them a couple of days off.”

Thirteen fires were started on Friday alone, bringing the total to 160 throughout the province.

“We have 11 fires of note around the province, and they are primarily in the north,” says Eno, who points out the fire hazard is still high to extreme in northern BC.
