UBC takes steps to improve campus inclusion

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pro-rape and racist chants at UBC orientations last year drew widespread criticism, so the school is making moves to ensure a more inclusive environment this time around.

Student leaders will have to do online courses and three-hour in-person education sessions which spell out acceptable behaviour ahead of this year’s FROSH orientation, says Louise Cowin with UBC.

“Those guidelines really spell out clear expectations on issues of equity and inclusion for all UBC student orientations,” Cowin says

Last year, UBC made national headlines after students were caught shouting chants which promoted underage rape.

“Student leaders will be asked to sign a commitment to respect others, and to help UBC create a community that’s welcoming to all,” Cowin adds.

Beyond the pro-rape chants, students also came under fire for chants which belittled First Nations.
