Everybody should be prepared for an earthquake: Emergency Management BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After yesterday’s earthquake left over 200 people injured, government staff here say many of those injuries could have been avoided.

With our region expecting a massive earthquake in the coming years, Kelli Kryzanowski with Emergency Management BC says we need to be mindful of taking shelter once we start to feel the shaking.

“A lot of people were injured from this earthquake because they didn’t practice the drop, cover and hold on method, which we as emergency management really support,” says Kryzanowski.

She adds many who were hurt in California didn’t take cover under sturdy furniture.

“This is a great opportunity for us to relearn and remind ourselves about what is important for us to practice during an emergency, before and after,” says Kryzanowski.

Beyond reacting appropriately during the quake, Kryzanowski says families should develop meeting plans and get a kit with supplies to last a few days.
