Unbudgeted daycare costs could hurt retailers: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Extra daycare costs because of the education dispute is likely unbudgeted for parents who may then make concessions elsewhere according to a retail expert.

If there is a long impasse between the government and teachers parents will be diverting a lot of money into childcare.

Retail Expert David Ian Gray says for that to really dampen sales, the strike would have to go on for quite sometime. He adds certain markets could see more harm from that than others.

“Where the cost of childcare is higher and where there is no family and people to pitch in. Any dollar spent that {was] unplanned on day in and day out looking after the kids if the parents have to work could impact the family budget.”

Picketing has picked up again this week with it expected to be in full action on September 2nd.
