Students holding protests as teachers strike enters second week of school year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Frustrated to have their education put on hold, students held protests today at a number of Metro Vancouver schools.

With the teacher strike entering its second week of this school year, students at Eric Hamber called for the government to make moves to bring this dispute to an end.

Grade 8 student Helena Kantowicz organized this protest.

“I’m just hoping that through this, everyone will see, it’s not just the teachers against the government,” Kantowicz says. “It’s affecting us just as much as anybody else.”

Sophie Teed is supposed to be starting Grade 12.

“It’s pretty rough being in Grade 12 because the first term is what counts for university, and we’re really cutting into the first term,” says Teed. “There’s concern that, I don’t know, we won’t be able to complete the year if [the strike] keeps going on.”

Students also demonstrated at Seycove Secondary and Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver, and there was also a protest on the 208 overpass on the Trans Canada Highway.
