August may have been a record-breaker for Vancouver International Airport

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While traffic is down significantly at Bellingham International Airport, the Vancouver International Airport may have seen its busiest August ever.

Daniel Zenk in Bellingham says traffic dropped about 10 per cent over the summer for a couple of reasons. He claims one of those reasons is the industry is changing.

“Flights that are not performing as well are moving to either seasonal or they’re not continuing. I will tell you though each destination that is lost hits us pretty hard because it’s not only revenue from parking but also from the passengers that purchase in our restaurants as well as spend other money locally,” he explains.

Reg Krake with YVR says they’re not seeing that at all. He says airlines are actually adding more services as BC continues to be a tourist hot spot.

“August may be our biggest month ever. We’re looking like we may even surpass 2 million passengers which will be a first time we’ve ever done that in a month. And really year-over-year, in 2013 we had 17.9 million passengers which was a record year in itself. In 2014, we are on track to potentially breakthrough right through 18 million right into 19 million-plus passengers.”

He adds the numbers are high across all sectors and there isn’t one specific country or continent responsible for the uptick.
