Suicide prevention exhibit featured at Surrey funeral home

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A funeral home in Surrey is recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day in a unique way.

The Valley View Funeral Home is hosting an art exhibit called “Man-Up Against Suicide.”

The exhibit will feature artwork by people who have lost close men that took their own life.

Organizer Marlyn Ferguson says there will also be a panel of speakers to talk about suicide prevention, including those that have been affected and health professionals.

“The number of men who die by suicide is definitely more than women. That has increased in North America, especially in Canada,” she adds.

Ferguson says the discussion is especially timely with the recent death of Robin Williams.

UBC professor Dr. John Oliffe came up with the idea of the exhibit. Foster Eastman, a Vancouver artist, assisted in helping to produce the artwork.

The event begins at 7 p.m.
